OSHAWA -- General Motors of Canada has turned down a $3 billion emergency short-term bailout from the federal and provincial governments, surprising industry experts and employees.

DURHAM -- More students are choosing Durham's university as one of their post-secondary choices, say figures released by the Council of Ontario Universities.
Although the amount of high school students who checked off the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) as their first choice is down slightly, overall 3.4-per cent more have it on their application, compared to last year.

PICKERING -- It would be premature for the federal government to allocate $2 billion for a future airport in Pickering before a proper business case is presented, says Pickering Council.
At Monday's meeting, Council unanimously passed a motion put forward by Ward 1 Regional Councillor Bonnie Littley that "the Federal Minister of Finance and the Regional Chair of Durham Region do not advocate for federal infrastructure funding for an airport in Pickering until such time as a viable and accepted business case can be presented."

PICKERING -- A sewage odour control facility (OCF) doesn't belong in Pickering, Council said Monday after hearing from York Region consultants and staff, and residents opposed to its possible Cherrywood location.
The executive committee told York to consider alternate locations since the only sites ever looked at were in Pickering.
"I think that's a flaw in the process," said Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles.

AJAX -- The environmental assessment for the reconstruction of a portion of Ravenscroft Road should begin shortly.
Ajax council approved a recommendation to award the contract to conduct the EA to the consulting firm of R.V. Anderson Ltd.
The study will cover Ravenscroft from Williamson Drive north to a commercial property at the corner of Ravenscroft and Taunton roads.
